2. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
A summer mystery, Cady has always spent the summer with her cousins, The Liars, but the summer when she was fifteen had an awful fate. Something horrible happened to Cady during this summer, but she cannot remember what it was. With hazy flashbacks and agonising headaches, the doctors want to leave her to her own devices to figure out what happened. With many twists, turns and an ending you will never expect, this is perfect for the mystery lovers who are wanting a new summer read, if you have not read We Were Liars already.

3. The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
Bored of a summer in the twenty twenties? How about reading about the finest summer in the roaring twenties! “The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside, until the air is alive with chatter and laughter, and casual innuendo and introductions forgotten on the spot, and enthusiastic meetings between women who never knew each other’s names.” Is that not how you want to spend your summer?
The Great Gatsby is a great, classic read for the summertime because you can involve yourself in the book and get inspiration from the novel itself. The Great Gatsby is a world-famous book and an idyllic read with Fitzgerald’s timeless writing.

4. The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson
A book that often finds it ways on summer reading lists is the The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson. The story centres around Paul Kemp, a New York journalist in 1950s who moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work for major newspaper, The Daily News. Featuring love, jealously and violence, it is an adventurous and summer read that will evoke an adventurous side in you.
As well as a book, there is also an award--winning movie starring Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that came out in 2011. Therefore, if you sick and tired of reading (unheard of!) you can check out the movie instead.

5. Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton
A perfect holiday read, Everything I Know About Love details Dolly Alderton’s life from her teenage years to her thirties. It features hangover recipes, love stories, body issues and everything in between. It is a stellar read, extremely funny and never compromising the integrity of the books.
Need a quick, easy and honest book for lounging by the pool, Everything I Know About Love is exactly that. For a matter of fact, the book is for anytime because it is so relatable, funny and brilliantly wrote.

6. Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo
Winning a Booker Prize in 2019, Girl, Woman, Other is a novel that details a different story about a woman of colour in each chapter. Each story detailing an obstacle that they must face in the modern-day world. It is a fascinating novel to gorge yourself in because you learn so much from these women. You feel close to them, and you listen to their inner-most feelings that you connect with.
Girl, Woman, Other is an educational read that everyone should read, and enjoy during the summertime. Its colourful characters can bring some colour to your summer this year.

7. Duckfeet by Ely Percy
When I think of Summer, I think of a reminiscent time and Duckfeet is an extremely reminiscent book. It brings you back to your childhood, the colourful characters surrounding the main character, Kirsty.
Duckfeet is a novel, consisting of 65 short stories, that follows Kirsty from her first to last year in High School in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It is narrated by authentic Renfrewshire dialect and is very fluid to read. An excellent summer read for when you want to feel reminiscent of childhood.

8. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
A perfect historical romance that stays far away from the usual historic, heterosexual romance novels. A story that is grasped by perfect LGBTQ+ representation and a beautifully told love story. The story features an old Hollywood starlet who has decide to bear her true-life story to a unknown journalist for the first time in her career. The story details the story of Evelyn Hugo, her career, her friends and her seven husbands.
This story is the perfect book to read when you want to escape and live a life that you may never have, and what better time to do that than in the summertime!

9. Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given
This book is to be read on any day in any season in my opinion. Therefore, why have I included it? I’ll tell you why. Hot Girl Summer. We feel the need to change ourselves for Hot Girl Summer and this is the bible to do so. It allows us to change in such a healthy way and to better ourselves mentally.
It is not the typical novel that tells you how you should look to fit into society’s construct, but how to abandon all structures, or not, do whatever you want! This book for everyone to explore themselves and learn how to be the best version of them, and what a better place than to do it in the sun in summer!
