'Keep the Heid and Read’ is a new initiative in Scotland to get people reading again. Being hosted during Mental Health Week, ‘Keep the Heid and Read’ is curated towards positive mental health and improving reading intake in Scotland. Attempting to raise mental health and wellbeing in Scotland, ‘Keep the Heid and Read’, will take place on Wednesday the 11th of May.
This new initiative is encouraging readers of all ages and abilities to pick up anything, such as novel, magazine, articles, comic books, and read it for six minutes. Taking this pledge means that for only six minutes you can read whatever you want, you can be apart of a big, national reading moment.
‘Keep the Heid and Read’ is led by Scottish library and Information Council (SLIC) as well as Baillie Gifford. Libraries across Scotland are reciprocating well to this and sharing personal stories from the staff on which books they will be reading over and beyond the six minutes.
It was found in research that reading for six minutes a day can reduce stress by up to sixty-eight per cent.

Reading can impact mental health positively, helping you relax and restore yourself after a long day. Not only does it increase mental health but also productivity in yourself. You feel accomplished, even if it is only six minutes a day, and you can relay that feeling on your everyday life.
As part of the movement, readers are being asked to pledge their reading time by signing up to the campaign. Therefore, there can be an overall count of all the time that people have taken out of their day to read. This tally of time will be entirely inspirational and uplifting for people.

Reading is making its comeback and the Scottish government are doing what they can to support this. This reading initiative was also inspired after the decline in libraries during the Coronavirus Pandemic. SLIC want to get across that library are beneficial to the people’s mental health and connecting people together.
Taking place in-between Mental Health Week, 9th to the 15th of May, ‘Keep the Heid and Read’ is inspiring this nation to pick up literature and read. Does not have to be a lot, just enough for them to be content.
